Grace BRITTAIN
|
was my paternal great grandmother (Queens mother). She was born 26
December 1886, Lower Stondon, Shillington, Bedfordshire, married 4 August 1909
and died 28 October 1955 at 6 Raymond Cottages Ickleford Hitchin Herts, aged 68
of Cachexia and Breast Cancer. She had the following siblings: Walter (Wal),
Beth, Agnes, Bertha and Algernon (Alg) who married Celia, (who I called
great aunt, but who wasn't really, she was my fathers great aunt by marriage).
Alg and Celia ended up getting divorced, which was a real scandal in those
days, Celia went on to live to a ripe old age and actually celebrated her 50th
wedding anniversary with her second husband, Alfred Etherington. Celia and Alg
had a daughter Renee , and a son Tom.Celia outlived both her
children. Grace was the child of |

Sidney Charles DOLING
|
was my grandfather, he was born on 24 April 1908 at 37 Bedford
Street, Hitchin Herts. He died March 1986 in Stevenage. He had two brothers and
one sister, Kenneth, Jack Rawden and Comayne. On June 8th 1929 he
married Queenie Olney, , he was 21 and a bachelor. He was living at
Salmina, Bearton Road, Hitchin. Sidney was employed as an engineer at Geo W
Kings as an Agricultural Engineers Labourer. Kings was a large company that
originally made Agricultural Equipment, but then diversified to make pulleys
and hoists. Sidneys father, my great grandfather, was |
|
|
Sidney James Herbert DOLING
|
born 26 March 1884, Highfield Lane, South Stoneham, Southampton. He
was a butcher (journeyman). The rumours are, that when he was a young man he
ran away from home, wanting to catch a train to Itchen in Southampton. It is
believed that he got on a train taking him to Hitchin in Hertfordshire. There
does not seem to be any logical reason why he should have gone to Hitchin as
far as we are aware, unless it was such an accident. In 1907 he married Annie
BURTON, Sidney Charles mother who subsequently died . He then
married a second time, a Mrs Hewitt. There was a long drawn out
contesting of his will when he died, due to the fact that although the house
was left to my grandfather, Mrs Hewitt contested it and won. He died 7th June
1952 of Lung Cancer. He was living at 269 Bedford Road, Hitchin. Sidney James
Herbert had the following siblings: William born 1881, Arthur,
died Armistice day, there are details of an A A Doling died 23 October 1918 at
the Commonwealth War Graves web site (www.cwgc.org). Ernest born 27 June
1882, Edwin George, Frank, Louise and Elsie. Sidney James
Herberts father was |
|
|
Charles DOLING |
born 26 January 1852, Point End, Shirley,
Millbrook, Southampton. Christened 7 March 1852,Shirley, Southampton. He was a
carpenter on SJHs birth certificate, but on the 1881 census a farm
labourer living at 30 Wheelers Terrace, Eastleigh. In 1880 he married Sarah Ann
Burn who was born in 1855 in Winchester. They were married in
Eastleigh Parish Church, Southampton. He married again on 25 December 1905, an
Emma Barnes (nee Chapman) and they both lived, on the marriage
certificate, (tut!) at Burgess Street, South Stoneham, Southampton. Charles had
four siblings, William christened 6 January 1850, Eliza
christened 1 May 1859, Edmond George christened 2 April 1865 (born 1864)
who joined the Navy when 16/17 and Anna Maria christened 4 November
1855. Anna Maria had three children, but under the name of Doling, the father
is possibly one Johnson Harlow, but I have yet to confirm this. The children
were Joseph christened 20 July 1873 and Georgina Francis born
1880 and William. Charles father was |
|
|
Edmond DOLING |
christened 16 February 1823, North Stoneham, became an agricultural
labourer, married Elizabeth nee Mills. In the 1871 census, they were
down as living at 187 Pound Street, Millbrook, Southampton. But in the 1851
census they are listed as DOLLING living 55 Upper Shirley Road,
Millbrook, Southampton, this is too much of a coincidence not to be them as
they were all listed, Elizabeth, Edmond and Sarah. He had the following
siblings: James, christened 30 April 1820, Mary Ann c 3 October
1812, and John 23 April 1809 at Portsea St Mary. Their parents were |
|
|
Robert DOLING |
c 20th March 1756 in Portsea, St Mary and Sarah nee Goding
married in Alverstoke 6 December 1807. Their witnesses were Rob Evans and Eliza
Pink. Now an Eliza Dolin married a Robert Pink in Portsea St Mary, so I think
she might be his Aunt. Robert is listed as a labourer. In the Baptisms register
Robert had an elder brother, Luke, c 19 February 1755, he is listed as
the son of Luke Dolin. So between the birth of Luke and Robert, the 'g' was
added, whether deliberately or due to spelling misnomers who knows? Other
siblings were: Robert Godwin c 28 March 1762, (married 25 April 1789 in
Alverstoke an Eleanor Newland) John c 4 November 1753,
Esther c 25 June 1758 (possibly married a James Bay 18 July
1781)and Sarah c 4 May 1760, all in Portsea St Mary, they are the
children of |
|
|
Luke DOLING |
and Esther nee OakeshottMarried at Holy Trinity in Gosport,
Hants 28th December 1752 |

December 1752. Esther had many siblings: John c 12 January 1721,

10 March 1727, Anne c 5 February 1728, Richard c 25 December
1729, Anne 13 June 1731 (I think the first two must have died)
Godwin c 25 February 1732, William c 15 September 1734 and
Elizabeth c 4 September 1737. William married Jane Smith 18
January 1759, Richard married Elizabeth Plaw 20 November 1756 and
Benjamin married Ann Lane 13 April 1751 in Fawley Hants, they had loads
of children, Ann 22 May 1757, Benjamin c 21 April 1754, John 19 July 1761,
Martha c 10 February 1760 , Mary c 21 May 1769 (married John Newton 26
March 1796) and Thomas 29 May 1763. All were christened at St Marys Portsea.
They were the children of |
|
|
John OAKESHOTT |
and Hester nee Godwin. They were married at Holy
Trinity, Gosport, Hants on 3 August 1718. |
Queenie OLNEY
|
was born 24 September 1910 at 27 Wratten Road, Hitchin Herts, she
died 21 March 1974 at 5 Raymond Cottages Ickleford Hitchin Herts from a heart
attack and stroke, where she had lived all her married life, and had given
birth to her two children either there or next door at her mothers. She was a

c 29 October 1820 in Ickleford and Mary Ann Harris.
William had many siblings,Catherine c 24 /14 April 1808 (it appears that
Catherine had two sons both called Alfred, one c 13 May 1838 and the other c 29
November 1844. Neither of which appear to have a father). Kitty c 13
November 1814 David c 22 May 1825 Elizabeth c 27 July 1828,

born until after that date, this needs some checking!. John was the son of
|
|
|
John PILSWORTH |
born approx 1840 and Elizabeth Ann (Betsy) Hitson/Kitson, in
the 1881 census she is down as head of household, so I assume she was a widow
by this time. In the census she is down as a Bedmaker domestic, Eliza was down
as a Laundress. |
