In 1997 I decided that I was going to take up entering competitions seriously. This was about six months after I discovered uk.rec.competitions – a newsgroup designed for all the other strange people out there who love entering competitions. Actually I don’t think we’re strange at all. Surely the strange ones are those people who think we’re odd attempting (and in many instances, achieving) to get something for nothing. After I had come to this momentous decision I thought I would try to get together like minded people in Weston. At my first attempt at advertising the new Weston Competition Club I had three people contact me. Ruth, Lesley and Chris. We are now, after three years, very good friends (I hope!) and the club has grown slowly. We have had a few people come, stay a while, then disappear again, which is fine. There are no rules about permanent membership! Most of the time we just get together for a cup of coffee and to swap entry forms, oh and a good old natter about all the prizes we have/have not won (delete where applicable!) In the last three years the prizes have ranged from the sublime (all inclusive holiday to Antigua, trip to Paris on Concorde, wide screen television) to the ridiculous (wind up jumping heart, steradent tablets and 1001 t-shirts). Lean spells have hit almost all of us at one time or another, but the camaraderie of the club keeps us going. We meet once a month, usually on a Tuesday morning in the front room of one or other members houses, and anyone is welcome. If you fancy trying your hand and getting something for nothing (and lets be honest, who doesn’t?) then contact me and come along. You will be most welcome (especially if you come with some entry forms!).
