Racing Legends Cars

This was a competition run by Superdrug and Old Spice. Luckily my dad wears it all the time, so buying the qualifier wasn’t an unnecessary expense. My slogan was obviously considered a winner and I won a days racing. Bright and early one morning I set off with a friend to Staffordshire to a very small go kart racing track. When we were almost there I mentioned to the friend that the cars were ‘Legends’. There was a long pause. ‘Oh, right, err, have you ever seen them?’ Motor racing (of any kind) isn’t a particular interest of mine, so I had to admit that I hadn’t. ‘We’ll be lucky if we fit in them’ he said. Legend race carLegends cars are replicas of old American cars, fine, except they are scaled down replicas! Now I am not a little woman, and my friend is 6’4" so I was quite dismayed. When we arrived there I understood what he meant, they appeared VERY small, but none the less the organisers assured us we would fit. There was supposed to be twenty of us, but only half that number turned up so we started off by having a race on the radio controlled cars, this looked much easier than is actually was, and in the four heats I came last every time, mind you the problem was that to steer right you moved the lever left, being a woman I don’t drive like that!!

We were then treated to lunch, which was very enjoyable, and as there was only half the numbers, there was plenty to go around, goody bags were handed out to us all and we then went off for the main event.Banderlero car The chap who was teaching us was one Tiff Needel, I think he is some racing driver, but I’ve never heard of him, but he was very friendly and helpful, and made no comments (within my hearing at least) about women drivers! We actually got to drive two cars, one was the Old Spice Legends car and the other was a Bandelero go kart. Now this did cause a slight problem for Kevin – they had to remove the roof so he could get his head in, but apart from that, no problems. Driving the two types of cars was a really wonderful experience, the Bandelero was the only one in Britain. They race them in the US but no licences have been issued for racing in the UK, so the only people in Britain who have raced them were the ten winners. We returned to the marquee for another meal and the day was rounded off with a quiz, Kevin came second and I came third (who said ‘what a coincidence’?!) so we came away stocked up to the nines with goodies.

This prize really sums up why I enter competitions. Winning holidays and other bits are wonderful, but when you win a competition like this, one that money can’t buy, it makes it all the more enjoyable. It is similar with the trip to Paris, we travelled on Concorde, ok, money can buy it, but for Mr and Mrs Average the cost is prohibitive. And of course now it looks as though money can’t buy it …….
